Gateway Workforce Initiative Hosts Lunch & Learn with Ingram State to Bridge Reentry and Employment

On Wednesday, June 18, the Gateway Workforce Initiative hosted a Lunch & Learn event featuring J.F. Ingram State Technical College (ISTC), Alabama’s only postsecondary institution exclusively serving incarcerated students. Held at Riviera Utilities in Foley, the event brought together business leaders, workforce advocates, and community stakeholders to explore a unique aspect of workforce development: preparing justice-involved individuals for meaningful employment.

Dr. Butch Young, representing ISTC, delivered an informative and moving presentation highlighting the college’s mission and impact. With more than 20 career and technical training programs offered inside Alabama’s correctional facilities, ISTC equips students with nationally recognized credentials that prepare them for high-demand jobs upon reentry. Dr. Young emphasized how these programs not only reduce recidivism but also contribute to a stronger, more inclusive workforce.

“The individuals we serve are often overlooked, but with the right training and support, they become some of the most committed, hardworking employees a company could ask for,” Dr. Young shared. “We’re not just teaching trades ... we’re offering second chances.”

Attendees had the opportunity to learn how local employers can engage with reentry programs, support rehabilitation through employment, and ultimately strengthen their own operations by tapping into a motivated talent pool. The session highlighted the importance of partnerships between business, education, and corrections in tackling Alabama’s workforce challenges from every angle.

The Lunch & Learn underscored Gateway’s mission to connect local industry with innovative workforce solutions. For employers interested in hiring graduates of ISTC or supporting vocational reentry training, this event offered a compelling case to get involved.
